Acrylic Painting (beginner/intermediate) 13 yrs & up
This class is scheduled to begin Tuesday, January
10th.

week session + supplies (a supply list will be provided at time of sign-up)
Acrylics are a wonderful medium to express yourself
in color and they are very easy to use. In this class, professional artist and certified teacher Nathan Perry will teach the
basics, starting with how to mix colors and the proper use and care of your brushes. Acquire an understanding of how to prepare
your canvas and appropriately apply layers of paint in an effective way. Learn the basics of color theory and numerous techniques
that will help develop creativity, using the principals of design. You will also learn the concept of perspective, various
brushing styles, how to render texture and emulate other realistic properties.



Introduction to Scratchboard for 13 yrs & up
This class is scheduled to begin Monday, January 9th.

Scratchboard is a dynamic medium where the artist
renders a composition by scratching lines into a black inked external surface to expose a white internal layer with a straight
or curved scratch knife. The lines can be very fine and delicate, or bold and gestural. This class introduces you to composition,
art design principals and theory, and various ways of using lines and value. The class also introduces students to proper
use of materials and ways of developing creativity and new ways of seeing.
Theatre Scenery & Mural Painting Workshop for 14 yrs & up
for THE LION, THE WITCH, and
THE WARDROBE with Betsy McGrew

Betsy has an extensive background and great talent as a mural painter
and has been commissioned for her work for many years. We are lucky to have her talents at our disposal at AFAA, where she
has worked on several theater productions as a backdrop/scenery designer (Snow Queen, Doctor Dolittle, It's a Wonderful
Life, and more). Here's a unique opportunity to work with our resident artist Betsy McGrew as she prepares our stage for
it's various productions; be part of the process, from it's sketching stages to the finished product, when the actors
take the stage and the lights go up.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:
NATHAN PERRY (Intro to art – teens & adults) Nathan has taught both adolescents and adults many different
types of art styles using a diversity of materials. He also teaches multi-media and photography. He has an extensive
art background as a graphic designer and professional fine artist and photographer for ten years. Additionally, he holds
a bachelor's degree in fine arts, an associated degree of science in graphic design, and a graduate degree in teaching.
He will bring expertise to the subject matter he teaches. Nathan will be teaching our adult art classes this semester.
BETSY McGREW (Art, K-12th grade) Betsy moved to Alaska from Georgia in August
of 2010. She holds an Associates of Science in Commercial Art degree from Southern Arkansas University/Technical Branch and
she also studied Graphic Design and Illustration at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.Working with children and youth
has been a big part of Betsy’s life; from teaching individual art lessons, to being a substitute teacher in the arts.
Betsy has an extensive background and great talent as a mural painter and she has worked on several AFAA theater productions
as a backdrop designer. She is glad to be teaching at the Academy, diving into shadow and light, hues and values and of course
