To Discover the Artist Within
Celebrating our 30th Anniversary, the Alaska Fine Arts Academy is proud of the legacy began by its founders, Arthur and Eleanor Braendel.
In 1946, Art Sr. and Eleanor moved to Alaska and homesteaded part of what is now Eagle River. Art and Eleanor were heavily involved in music instruction and performance. They were two of the original founders of the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra. The Braendels performed with the ASO for sixty seasons until their retirement.
It was not until 1984, however, that Art and Eleanor formally established a center for the instruction of music and other forms of art instruction . They originally called it the Eagle River Fine Arts Academy. Later, in the 1990’s, the name changed to the Alaska Fine Arts Academy. From the very beginning, the Academy intended to teach more than just music. The Braendels were honored with the Governor’s Life Time Achievement in the Arts Award in 2008, the Anchorage Mayors Lifetime Achievement award in 2004, and the Bear Paw Festival Lifetime Achievement Award.
Over the last 30 years the Alaska Fine Arts Academy has seen great changes to Eagle River and the surrounding areas. What will never change, is the philosophy and mission, that the arts are for everyone and #artmatters.
